It may surprise you to know, according to the National Association of Realtors, that one of every five homes purchased in the United States is bought by a single woman. While single women buy approximately 1.5 million homes each year, single men buy half that many.

Because women are pursuing a better education and subsequently have a greater earning power, more single women qualify for mortgages on their own than ever before. Along with the trend for women to marry later in life, and many who opt to be single, it's not surprising that single women are the second largest group of home buyers and the fastest growing home buyer demographic.

For most women, their home is their primary asset. According to a nationwide poll commissioned by Sears, 41% of women said the equity in their home is worth more than all their other assets combined and another 30% thought it might be. (In the same poll, 3 out of 5 women said they would rather receive an hour of advice from Bob Vila than from Dr. Phil!)

Buying a home is an opportunity to put a foundation to your money management with a huge growth potential. While women live longer, they have less earning power than men and usually work fewer years towards accumulating Social Security and pension benefits. That's why it is important for women to save more and invest wisely for future financial security.
